Tottenham to miss out on Kane replacement option who’s banged in 49 goals in two years

Tottenham’s summer transfer plans are set to be dealt a blow as Daniel Levy’s search for a Harry Kane replacement goes on

Ange Postecoglou’s quest to find a long-term replacement for Harry Kane is set to be dealt a major blow with Lille striker Jonathan David reportedly favoring a move to Italy. Tottenham were first linked with the 24-year-old last August when their former talisman began negotiating a move to Bayern Munich, later joining the Bundesliga giants in an £82million deal.

Their interest followed a campaign where David, 24, had scored 26 times at club level. And the star has proved every bit as prolific in the 2023/24 campaign, striking 23 goals in all competitions to take his tally to 49 in less than two seasons.

His form has inevitably led to speculation that the North London club will renew their interest in the summer transfer window. Tottenham responded to losing Kane by signing forward Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest for £ 50 million, before bringing in Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

The Welshman has struck five times in the Premier League thus far and despite his clear potential, is yet to replicate Kane’s prolific form. Werner meanwhile, has struggled in front of goal and is expected to head back to Germany at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

But the prospect of bringing David on board is dwindling following reports the Canadian international has his heart set on a move to Napoli. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the reigning Serie A champions view him as an ideal replacement for Victor Osimhen, who has been himself heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Italian publication claims that a meeting has already taken place between Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna and the player’s representatives. And David’s ambitions to head to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium are not said to hinge on whether their club seals Champions League qualification or not.

Lille have previously implied they want a £43million fee for David, who joined the club from Gent in 2020. He’s since scored 81 times in 173 club appearances and was instrumental in them breaking the monopoly of PSG by winning the Ligue 1 title in his debut season in France.
