ESPN REPORT: Lions CB Cameron Sutton receives big suspension

According to reports, former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton will miss eight games.

After breaking the league’s personal conduct policy, former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton was suspended for the first eight games of the 2024 season without pay, according to an NFL Network report that broke on Monday. Sutton got into a fight this offseason that started off as a felony domestic battery by strangulation charge but was subsequently reduced to a misdemeanor. Adam Schefter claims that Sutton will not be appealing his punishment. It’s done now.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office made the warrant public while Sutton remained at the Lions facility, and Detroit released him the next day. The Lions were unaware that there had been an outstanding warrant for Sutton’s arrest for almost a month.

Team president Rod Wood stated, “We were able to reach Cam and talked about it and suggested he get counsel and do the right thing to turn himself in.” “We decided to release him after that, and we met for the remainder of the day and the next morning.”

In order to avoid prosecution, Sutton agreed to turn himself in later and enroll in a domestic violence intervention program.

Since then, Sutton has inked a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team that originally selected him in the draft. However, he will now have to miss the 2024 season’s first half.

Sutton played every game for Detroit in the previous season, starting all 17 as the Lions’ top cornerback on defense. However, the Lions made a ton of moves this summer to strengthen the position, including drafting both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., signing Amik Roberts, and dealing for Carlton Davis.

How this affects Sutton’s financial pledge to the Lions is unknown. As of the last time we heard, Sutton intended to file a grievance against Detroit in order to recoup a portion of his $10.5 million guarantee, which the organization had revoked upon his March release.
