Footage of Ange Postecoglou furiously taking his team to task over a defensive error has resonated with Tottenham fans as the Aussie manager informs his Celtic club that he wants to take the top job with Spurs.
The 57-year-old just steered Celtic to the domestic treble after beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-1 in the Scottish Cup final on the weekend, the eighth time Celtic has completed the clean sweep.
Now his focus is reportedly on Tottenham Hotspur, with the embattled Premier League outfit set to make a formal approach for his services on Monday.
It is becoming increasingly likely the former Socceroos manager will join the Spurs, after informing Celtic top brass including Dermot Desmond of his desire to join the struggling side.
Tottenham crashed out of the Champions League and FA Cup this season and finished the Premier League season in eighth spot, well below expectations.
That led to the club parting ways with former manager Antonio Conte in March. In light of the news, footage has re-emerged of Postecoglou giving Australia’s national team, the Socceroos, a spray for the ages after a World Cup qualifying loss.
‘We must be better. That’s just careless,’ Postecoglou can be heard saying as he bangs his fist on the screen.
‘Stop it right there, Pete. There’s one, two, three [of you].
‘We cannot f**king concede a goal there. There’s got to be a reaction there. Someone! ‘F**k’s sake!’
After a very lengthy pause, Postecoglou then bellows: ‘Do you want to be a f**king soft team?’
The video has some Spurs fans excited, believing the Aussie’s no-nonsense approach is exactly what the players have been missing.
‘I think he would give them the good old kick up the backside they maybe need to perform to their potential best,’ one fan said.
‘Would love to be a fly on the wall at Spurs if this happened,’ said another.
‘Ange Postecoglou could be the change that Tottenham Hotspur needs to rock their players out of their complacency and push them into championship contention,’ an optimistic fan added.Spurs players have already been on the receiving end of some tough love from former coaches in recent years.
Jose Mourinho was filmed delivering a rant for the ages in Tottenham’s All or Nothing documentary in 2020.
‘Our biggest problem is one, missing s**t passes! F**king sloppy, f**king slow, pass back when the pass should be in front… It’s sloppy,’ he said.
Then Conte took aim at his players, the club and its owners in an extraordinary spray.
‘We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart,’ he said on March 19 after a draw with Southampton.
But some Tottenham fans fear a withering spray behind closed doors like the one Postecoglou delivered to the Socceroos could end up seeing players walk out on the club.
‘Any big egos would be out the door as soon as he arrives,’ one fan posted.
‘I’m so for him now lol but expect the ‘manager to hard on players’ narrative to surface six months into his tenure,’ said another.
‘Our players will definitely cry,’ added another.
