James Maddison transfer latest: Tottenham ‘push’ ahead of Newcastle as Leicester City price set

The latest Leicester City transfer news as we bring you the latest reports around the future of James Maddison who is attracting interest from Tottenham and Newcastle this summer.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison is likely to be one of the names talked about a lot over the coming weeks as clubs prepare their squads for the new season.

After relegation to the Championship, Maddison is expected to be one of the players who will leave the club this window with two Premier League clubs said to be interested in signing him. Both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked this summer, after City turned down two bids from the Magpies this time last year.Maddison is currently on holiday and will be given an extra break following his involvement in England’s World Cup qualifiers last week. But that has not stopped speculation over where his future could lie.

Contract situation
Maddison has a contract with City until the summer of 2024, meaning he has just one year left to run in his deal at the King Power Stadium. It means that if City don’t sell him this summer, they risk another situation similar to that of Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian will leave on a free transfer this summer after not signing a new contract on offer to him by the club. City have reportedly been in talks with Maddison over a new deal, relegation to the Championship decreases the chances of a deal being reached, meaning that City may be forced to cash in this summer.City’s asking price
It is understood that City want a fee of £60 million for Maddison this summer. The club could point to deals for England internationals Mason Mount and Declan Rice who are expected to leave for more than that, despite them being in a similar situation in terms of their contracts.

Deal ‘difficult’ for Newcastle
Sky Sports report that a deal for Maddison will be ‘difficult’ following a move for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali. Newcastle are close to completing a £55m move for the AC Milan man.It is said if that does happen, then Newcastle will find it difficult to reach City’s valuation of Maddison without risking falling outside of financial fair play rules. Eddie Howe is said to have prioritised a move for Tonali over Maddison.

Tottenham will ‘push’ for transfer
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given the latest on Tottenham’s pursuit of Maddison by saying that the club will ‘push’ for the City man ‘next week.’ The reporter adds that he remains ‘the priority’ for new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Reports earlier in the month claimed that City had turned down a joint £50m bid from Tottenham for both Maddison and teammate Harvey Barnes. That bid has since been denied by Tottenham, they do however seem close to making their move for Maddison.
