According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are set to rival Liverpool for the signing of Wolves midfielder, Matheus Nunes.
Liverpool have been interested in signing Nunes since last summer, but Chelsea’s recent habit of hijacking signings, such as Mykhaylo Mudryk from Arsenal, could put a spanner in the works for the Reds.
Nunes, a Portuguese international, only joined Wolves last summer from Sporting, but it seems that he is using the Midlands club as a stepping stone to move on to bigger and better things.
With Chelsea and Liverpool both struggling this season, adding a player like Nunes to their squad could be a huge boost as they look to add an extra dynamic in the midfield.
Nunes is certainly good enough to play for Chelsea. After all, he’s been described by Pep Guardiola as ‘one of the best players in the world’.
Chelsea’s interest in Nunes is not surprising, as they have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent weeks, such as Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
However, Liverpool may have a slight edge as they’ve been in for Nunes since last summer, and they have been keeping a close eye on him since then – reportedly preparing a move at the end of the season.
In fact, Ben Jacobs has stated that Liverpool have started the process of signing Nunes already.
The Reds have had a difficult start to the season and currently sit in 9th place in the Premier League, 21 points behind leaders Arsenal. The Merseyside club’s midfield has been a concern for fans and pundits alike, as the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have struggled for form, and adding a player like Nunes could help to strengthen the team’s midfield and bolster their chances of challenging for major honours, once again, next season.
On the other hand, Chelsea have also had a poor start to the season and they are currently sitting in 10th position, currently 10 points off the top four. The Blues have been spending freely in the transfer market, and Nunes is exactly the type of player they could snatch from other Liverpool’s noses.
In any case, with both Liverpool and Chelsea showing interest in signing Matheus Nunes, it will be interesting to see where the midfielder ends up. Whether it be Anfield or Stamford Bridge, one thing is certain – Nunes may soon be playing for one of the Premier League’s top clubs.
