Tottenham Hotspur: Romano drops Porro transfer claim

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that right-back Pedro Porro is ‘prepared’ to join Tottenham Hotspur this month.

Spurs recently acquired Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma on loan, as they were able to hijack the Everton’s move for the winger, who had looked set to join, according to Sky Sports.

Another signing could be joining Antonio Conte’s side in the form of Pedro Porro. 90min’s Graeme Bailey claimed that Tottenham are growing in confidence that they can bring him to the club.

Porro has six assists from 14 league appearances for Sporting, so is offering plenty in an attacking sense in the Portuguese top flight.

Romano spoke on Wednesday’s edition of CBS Sports’ House of Champions show about the potential move, claiming that the two clubs were meeting over a possible deal as he offered an update on the talks.

He stated: “It’s not just Danjuma, because the next one, I think it will be Pedro Porro from Sporting.

“One of the best right-backs around, a really interesting deal. Sporting want €45m, the full release clause paid. Tottenham are offering around €38m plus add-ons.

“But there is a meeting right now while we’re speaking in Lisbon between the intermediaries to discuss, so Tottenham and Sporting are speaking, the player has an agreement with Tottenham. He’s prepared to join Tottenham.”

THE VERDICT: YOU WON’T GET MANY BETTER
We believe that Spurs may have a real gem on their hands should they land Porro, as he could provide a boost to their squad.

It is indeed interesting that there are lengthy negotiations despite there being a release clause and Sporting appearing to have a clear stance over their demands, but perhaps Spurs are simply looking for the best deal possible before showing their hand in talks as the window nears the deadline.

Sky Sports man Kevin Hatchard has raved about the right-back, claiming that he would be ‘perfect‘ for Conte and his Tottenham side.

Porro ranks in the top 1% for both assists and shot-creating actions for players in his position outside Europe’s top competitions in the last year (as per FBref), so Spurs may not find much better in terms of a full-back who can create chances and goals.

Matt Doherty certainly ranks well in the same areas within the top tier of European tournaments – appearing in the top 13% and 31% in the same categories respectively – but adding Porro could add that extra bit of creative quality in Tottenham’s final third.

Romano’s comments suggest the clubs are close on a deal, but it remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached in the coming days. However, his excitement over the player’s potential can surely be seen as a positive sign for Spurs and their supporters.
