Tottenham news: Pundit issues intriguing verdict after controversial Cristian Romero picture emerges

Frank McAvennie is baffled as to how referee Anthony Taylor missed Tottenham defender Cristian Romero’s “blatant” hair pull on Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on Sunday (14 August).

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said the referee “did well” aside from that incident.

As shown by Barstool Football (15 August), Romero, 24, was caught pulling Cucurella’s hair as the pair jostled in the box ahead of a Spurs corner.

VAR did not deem the incident worthy of a red card so took no further action against Romero.

The resulting corner resulted led to a late equaliser for the visitors, much to the dismay of Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking to club media after the 2-2 draw (14 August), Tuchel said he “cannot understand” how Romero was allowed to stay on the pitch after the incident. When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, McAvennie said: “The one that he missed was blatant and Tottenham got a goal from that.“I don’t know how he missed that but largely I thought the referee did well. That was a blatant miss. He [Romero] got a hold of him [Cucurella] and just pulled down.

“How the referee didn’t see it, I know he’s looking at the ball coming over but he should’ve seen it. It was only ten yards from him. I don’t think he’s biased I just think he missed one. I thought the referee did well apart from that one mistake.“
